The site publishes medical information for patients, free of charge and without advertising. This page states what you may do with the content and under which conditions.

In brief

  • The content is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
  • You may copy, translate and adapt the material if you credit the author and the site, if you do not use it commercially and if you distribute it under the same license.
  • Commercial use requires the author's written permission, requested through the contact form.
  • The site is educational. It does not replace a medical consultation and does not create a doctor-patient relationship.

1. What these terms cover

The terms apply to the whole site: the text of the questions and answers, the glossary, the medical calculators, the figures and the Atom feeds. They apply in all 14 languages, because the translations are versions of the same content.

Using the site means you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the content beyond simply reading it.

2. The content license

The content is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. The full text of the license is at creativecommons.org.

The license gives you three rights and asks three conditions of you. The rights: you copy and redistribute the material in any format, you adapt it and you translate it. The conditions: you credit the author, you do not use it commercially and you distribute it under the same license.

3. What the license does not cover

The name of the site, the logo and the visual identity remain reserved. Do not use them in a way that suggests your material is published or endorsed by us.

The license also does not cover material that belongs to others and is only quoted here: the titles of the articles in the reference lists, excerpts from the guidelines of medical societies and any image with a separately stated source. The rights of their holders apply to these.

4. How to credit correctly

A complete credit has four elements: the author, the title of the site, the address of the page used and the name of the license. Example: "Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorin Ioacara, Diabetes Academia, diabetesacademia.com/t1dm/sports, CC BY-NC-SA 4.0".

If you have modified the material, say what you changed. A translation, a shortened version or an adaptation for another audience are modifications.

5. Commercial use

The license does not cover commercial use: selling the material, including it in a paid product or service, using it in advertising or in a company's promotional material.

For such uses ask for written permission, through the contact form. The answer comes within 30 days.

6. Liability and changes

The content is educational and does not replace a medical consultation. Its limits are described in the medical disclaimer. The site is provided as it is, with no guarantee that it is available without interruption or free of errors.

The terms may change. The date at the top of the page shows the last change, and corrections to medical content are recorded in the corrections log.
